Artificial intelligence is entering a new era with the rise of Agentic AI, autonomous systems capable of acting independently to achieve objectives without constant human input.
Unlike traditional chatbots or large language models (LLMs) that respond to prompts, Agentic AI takes initiative. It doesn’t just answer questions; it solves problems, learns from its progress, and refines its strategies.
Imagine an AI personal assistant that plans a vacation, handles all the bookings, and adjusts the itinerary based on your preferences, without needing detailed instructions at every step.
That’s the essence of Agentic AI: it takes your goal and works toward it autonomously, learning and iterating along the way.

How Does Agentic AI Work?
Agentic AI starts with a goal. Once the objective is defined, the AI agent uses LLMs to understand what’s needed, creates a task list, and determines the best way to proceed. It gathers information online or through connected systems and continues refining its approach until the goal is achieved.
For example, OpenAI recently introduced simple task automation for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users. These AI agents can deliver daily news summaries, monitor the stock market, or set reminders, all while notifying you across devices once tasks are complete.
The potential extends far beyond small tasks. Businesses, healthcare, and software development are already leveraging Agentic AI to boost productivity, automate complex workflows, and even redefine traditional roles.
Current Applications of Agentic AI
Transportation
Self-driving cars are perhaps the most recognizable use case for Agentic AI. Companies like Waymo use it to help vehicles navigate roads, make split-second decisions, and adapt to real-time traffic conditions, all without human intervention.
Even semi-autonomous vehicles with features like collision avoidance and lane-keeping systems rely on these principles.
Business and Productivity
Agentic AI is transforming workplaces by automating repetitive tasks and streamlining operations. Microsoft has launched a suite of AI agents designed for specific job functions.
These tools work across teams, businesses, and organizations, reducing repetitive workloads and increasing efficiency. The company’s Copilot Chat, for instance, introduces pay-as-you-go AI agents for Microsoft 365 users, empowering employees to focus on creative, high-value tasks.

Similarly, Nvidia has introduced "knowledge robots" for office work. These agents handle tasks like planning and reasoning, making them ideal for businesses looking to replace tedious white-collar jobs with smart automation.
Even OpenAI recently released Tasks, their virtual assistant feature that can remember and remind tasks to users.

Nvidia’s healthcare agents aim to optimize clinical trials, manage the rollout of new therapies, and improve patient outcomes. Meanwhile, Hippocratic AI provides specialized agents with human-like avatars to support tasks ranging from lifestyle counseling to dialysis onboarding.
Software Development
In coding, Agentic AI is proving invaluable. Tools like Devin can autonomously manage every step of software development, from planning to debugging to deployment.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang calls this the next major AI service, envisioning a world where every developer has an AI assistant to support their work.
Challenges and Ethical Concerns
While Agentic AI offers significant benefits, it also introduces new challenges. For instance, the autonomy of these systems raises questions about accountability. If an AI agent makes a mistake, whether in handling sensitive financial data or performing a medical task, who is responsible?
Additionally, issues like hallucinations, where AI generates false or misleading outputs, can have serious consequences. Researchers have even observed AI agents exhibiting erratic behavior in controlled environments, such as escalating violence in video game simulations.
As AI systems grow more complex and integrated into critical systems, validating their accuracy and reliability becomes essential.
Another significant concern is data privacy. Agentic AI systems often require access to sensitive information, like financial records or medical histories, to function effectively.
This raises the question: how comfortable are we entrusting AI with such critical data?
The Future of Agentic AI
The development of Agentic AI is accelerating, with major players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Nvidia leading the charge. OpenAI plans to launch a new system called Operator in early 2025, while Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet already integrates Agentic AI for coding and API tasks.
In the near future, interconnected Agentic AI networks could revolutionize smart cities by managing traffic, optimizing energy use, and enhancing public safety.
However, the success of these systems will depend on robust oversight, ethical frameworks, and thoughtful integration with human decision-making.
Agentic AI also has the potential to tackle global challenges. It could monitor ecosystems, combat climate change, and streamline resource management. But as the technology evolves, it will likely present new ethical and philosophical questions.
Can AI truly have agency without accountability? And how do we balance its benefits with the risks it poses to privacy, security, and human jobs?
